Helsinki Police Symphonic Band is the Wind Band of the Year 2020

The Finnish Wind Band Association has granted the Wind Band Of The Year 2020 -award to the Helsinki Police Symphonic Band. The recognition is given on the grounds of the previous year’s activity.

In the award foundations The Wind Band Association states that the past year has been a very exceptional one. Despite the difficulties with the pandemic, Helsinki Police Symphonic Band has been active with many streamed concerts, tv shows, and a Christmas record acclaimed by critics, with brilliant soloists Helena Juntunen and Mika Pohjonen.

-We are indeed very glad and flattered for this recognition. The past year has meant hard times for each and every orchestra. There has been need for numerous plan B:s, and there were times any of the plans couldn’t be carried out after all, describes the chief conductor Sami Ruusuvuori.

-Despite unusual conditions we managed to reach hundreds of thousands of people with all kinds of recordings. To make this happen, our musicians had to adapt to a vast variety of tasks. They have worked as scriptwriters, editors, actors, sound, light and set designers, secretaries, disinfectors, marketers and so on. I also believe that with this recognition The Finnish Wind Band Association wished to mark our persistent work with new Finnish music for concert bands.

The award foundations point out Helsinki Police Symphonic Band’s collaboration with the Sibelius Academy, which has been showing the way for young composers towards the world of symphonic band music. Helsinki Police Symphonic Band has also recorded promotional material for Finnish wind band music publishers, helping Finnish wind band music to spread around the globe.

During the corona year, Helsinki Police Symphonic Band has even recorded a series of videos for children with introductions on instruments and various important subjects. Some new songs were recorded for the series. One of the songs was elected as the Children’s Song Of The Year 2020. The success of the song spreaded the awareness of the concert band music to completely new areas. Instructive concerts, both live and streamed, have increased the visibility and reputation of wind band music as a whole.
